Safari Northern Circuit and Zanzibar

During this private safari, you will be enjoying the nature and wildlife of the Northern Parks of Tanzania: Tarangire National Park, Serengeti National Park and the world-famous Ngorongoro crater. You will be traveling together with your local and professional guide while taking you on this adventurous trip and showing you all the wildlife, nature and more. Tanzania is known as the best safari country in Africa. You will be staying in well-located (tented) camps and lodges with en-suite facilities all visited regularly by our team.(Safari Northern Circuit and Zanzibar)

A tented camp has little to do with camping. You sleep in a tent under canvas but in the tent there are regular beds, there is a toilet and a real shower. There is a good chance that you will hear the hyenas crying or other animal sounds at night. It is absolutely safe in the tent. When it is dark, after dinner, you are guided to the tent by a watchman. There is a whistle in every tent to call the watchman. Sleeping under canvas in the game parks is a unique experience and evokes the real ‘Out of Africa’ feeling!

Pros of this trip:

⦁ Safaris in the parks: Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro crater
⦁ During the safari, all meals are included
⦁ Pleasant alternation between tented camps and comfortable lodges.
⦁ There are swimming pools at all accommodations except in Serengeti
⦁ Zanzibar

Day 2: Sangaiwe Tented Lodge, Tarangire National Park (Sun, 14 July)

Tarangire National Park
After the Serengeti, Tarangire has the greatest concentration of wildlife in Tanzania and in the dry season the Tarangire River is a magnet for thirsty wildlife. Large herds of elephants and migratory wildebeest, zebra, buffalo, impala, gazelle, hartebeest and eland gather and not surprisingly the predators follow. This is also the one place in Tanzania where dry-country antelope such as oryx and gerenuk are regularly spotted.

Tarangire is also known for its spectacular baobab trees, and its breathtaking views of the Masaai Steppe and the mountains to the south. Located just a few hours drive from the town of Arusha, Tarangire is a popular stop for safaris travelling through the northern circuit on their way to Ngorongoro and the Serengeti. The park extends into two game controlled areas and the wildlife are allowed to move freely throughout.

Day Itinerary
Your Safari starts! Your private driver with private safari vehicle is waiting for you! The driver is well educated and has a lot of knowledge about the country, animals and nature and even more, he is very passionate about it. He will show you the beauty of his country! He will discuss with you the day to day program.

The safari vehicle has 6 or 8 window seats, including the driver’s one. When you are inside the parks the rooftop will go up so you can see the animals close by. In most vehicles you can charge your phone or batteries.

Tarangire National Park is a beautiful park and has a lot to offer! With 550 different bird species, it is a birders paradise. Nowhere in East Africa will you find so many bird species in one area! The park is also well known for their big herds of elephants.

Tarangire National Park is also a very scenic park with expansive views of baobab-studded grasslands. Tarangire River, a permanent river attracts many animals especially during the dry season (June-November) this is bringing the park to life with the large herds of elephant, wildebeest, buffalo, zebra, and Grants’s gazelle. Tarangire is also a good place to spot lions and the shy leopards. The park owes its name to Tarangire River, which flows through the area. It is characterized by dense vegetation of acacia and mixed woodland, the area around Tarangire River however, is dominated by huge baobab trees and old doum palm trees to a lesser prominence, as well as black cotton grass.

Though it is not as famous as other parks in the north, Tarangire offers the same attractions as other parks in the north. Its unique aspect is the annual animal immigration that takes place during the dry season.

At the end of the afternoon, you will make your way to Sangaiwe Tented Lodge for dinner and overnight stay.

Overnight: Sangaiwe Tented Lodge
Sangaiwe Tented Lodge is situated close to the Sangaiwe gate of the Tarangire National Park, offering stunning views over Lake Burunge. Day 4: Tanzania Bush Camps Central Serengeti, Serengeti National Park (Tue, 16 July)

Serengeti National Park
The Serengeti together with Kenya’s Masai Mara Game Park form Africa’s most famous wildlife park. The image of acacia trees on an endless grass plain epitomises Africa for many, and then add a Masai warrior and some cattle to the picture, and the conversation need go no further. The annual wildebeest migration through the Serengeti and the Masai Mara is the largest mass movement of land mammals on the planet – with more than a million animals following the rains. But that is not where the game viewing ends; large prides of lions, elephants and giraffes in grasslands, gazelles and eland to mention but a few. Aside from traditional vehicle safaris, hot-air ballooning over the Serengeti plains has become almost essential, and you can even do a horse riding safari.

Day Itinerary
After breakfast, you will start descending into the plains. Today is one big game drive, wherever you drive, you can encounter animals.

The name Serengeti is derived from the Maasai word Siringiti: endless plains. When entering the Serengeti it becomes clear quite soon that this is a very fitting name. As far as the eye reaches you find the plains, only interrupted by an occasional tree, kopje (rock formation) or wildlife. During the Great Migration, these planes are literally covered in animals, wildebeests and zebras, in search of grazing and water and participating in one of the largest annual movements of mammals on earth.

However, Serengeti National Park has more to offer than the Great Migration, large herds of Buffalo’s, numerous different kinds of Antelopes like the Topi, Hartebeest, Dik Dik, Thomson and Grant Gazelles and it is the best chance of spotting a Lion, or more accurately: Lions. The open plains form an ideal hunting ground for the fastest mammal on earth: the Cheetah.

At the end of the afternoon, you will go to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Visitors typically visit Tanzania to partake in at least one of the four well known Tanzanian tourist experiences: a relaxing seaside vacation on the picturesque island paradise of Zanzibar, an underwater tour of some of the world’s most renowned dive sites around the gorgeous Spice Islands, a safari adventure in some of Africa’s most impressive game reserves, or a hiking excursion around Mount Kilimanjaro National Park.

Whichever of these incredible holidays you choose, you will undoubtedly be welcomed by some fabulously friendly and peaceful inhabitants who, despite being divided into 120 different ethnic groups and cultures, live in harmony with one another and provide some of the most wonderfully exotic local cuisine you could imagine. With all of this diversity on offer, the most difficult part of your Tanzanian holiday experience is likely to be deciding where to go!(Safari Northern Circuit and Zanzibar)

Banking and Currency
Currency

In Tanzania, the unit of currency is the Tanzanian Shilling, which is divided into 100 Cents. Notes are issued in denominations of 500, 1000, 2000, 5000, and 10000 Shillings. Coins are issued in denominations of 50, 100 and 200 Shillings.

Banking

Banks are open from 9:00am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday. Many banks are equipped with 24 hour ATM machines.

Credit cards and travellers checks are not widely accepted in Tanzania. Where they are accepted can high service fees and poor exchange rates be expected. Major foreign currencies – particularly US $ – are accepted in Tanzania and are convertible at banks and bureau de changes in the main towns and tourist areas. If bringing cash in US $, please make sure bank notes are in good condition, with no cuts or damage and are not older than 2004. Most banks offer higher exchange rates for US $ 100 / US $ 50 bank notes compared to US $ 20 / US $ 10 or US $ 5 bank notes.

Travel, Transport and Getting Around
If you are visiting a number of parks and reserves in Tanzania, you can either drive or fly between them. Roads in most of the wilderness areas are in poor condition and unmarked, and self-driving is not recommended. Operators will supply you with a driver who doubles as an informal guide; alternatively, you can arrange to fly to your destination and utilize a car and driver supplied by the lodgings. Elsewhere in Tanzania, towns and cities are linked by a steady stream of buses and dala-dalas (minibuses), and in the cities, there is public transport in the way of buses, dala-dalas, taxis, and, in some places, bicycles or tuk-tuks.(Safari Northern Circuit and Zanzibar)

Precision Air run regular services, mostly via Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar, to all main towns and other destinations in East Africa and beyond. All national parks and some of the top-end luxury lodges have airstrips and

Coastal Air operates between these and the main airports on the mainland and the islands of Zanzibar, Pemba and Mafia. ZanAir has frequent connections between Zanzibar, Pemba and the mainland.

Food, Drink and Cuisine Advice
Most camps, lodges or hotels cater specifically to tourists and serve Western-style food, ranging in standard, but generally are excellent. Game lodges tend to offer a daily set menu with a limited selection, so it is advisable to have your tour operator specify in advance if you are a vegetarian or have other specific dietary requirements. First-time visitors to Africa might take note that most game lodges in and around the national parks have isolated locations, and driving within the parks is neither permitted nor advisable after dark, so that there is no realistic alternative to eating at your lodge.

Tap water in Tanzania is generally not safe to drink, and most travellers try to stick to mineral water. Filtered and bottled water can be difficult to find you are travelling outside of main town and so it is advisable to stock up. Most camps, lodges and hotels have bottled water readily available.

Climate and Weather
Just south of the equator, Tanzania is huge and its sheer size means that the climate varies considerably within it. However, generally the main rainy season, or the ‘long rains’, lasts during about March, April and May. Afternoon tropical downpours are the norm – which are heavier and more predictable beside the coast and on the islands. The humidity is high and daily temperatures reach the low-mid 30°s.

The long dry season lasts throughout June, July, August, September and October is when rainfall is unusual, even on the islands. Temperatures vary hugely with altitude and location, but it’s usually a fine, clear sky and sunny weather
– it’s a great time to visit Tanzania. During November and December there’s another rainy season: the ‘short rains’. These are much lighter than the main rains and less reliable.

If it has rained during the short rains, then it normally dries up for a few months, January and February, which is Tanzania’s ‘short dry season’, before starting to rain again in earnest in March.

Clothing and Dress Recommendations
It never gets really cold in Tanzania so lightweight clothing, preferably cotton or linen, is recommended. While on a game viewing safari, avoid brightly coloured clothing, stick to whites, beiges, khakis and browns. There may be long days sitting in safari vehicles, so it is advisable to wear light comfortable clothing such as short sleeved shirts and cotton/linen trousers or shorts. Denim will become too hot and extremely uncomfortable. Walking shoes and socks will be required.

The evenings will be chilly, so long sleeved shirts and trousers should be worn. A sweater may be needed. These will also prevent you being bitten by insects. A hat should be worn at all times outside. The sun may sometimes not feel hot, but it can still easily burn, especially if it is cloudy and overcast.

If visiting Zanzibar or any coastal town don’t forget to take a swimsuit, as it is invariably warm. Ladies are recommended to take cotton skirts, blouses and dresses. Sandals are a must for this environment! On the beaches and within the confines of hotels, normal swimwear is acceptable but nudity is not.
As over a third of the population in Tanzania is Muslim, it is therefore not etiquette for ladies to walk around in public displaying their legs and shoulders. Remember to dress modestly as short shorts, miniskirts, vests and tank tops will be frowned upon.

Internet Availability
Tanzania has good Internet Service Providers with email and internet services offered by many hotels and lodges (free / paid). In most towns there are plenty of private business centres and cyber cafes offering email and internet access, although the speeds might be somewhat slower than what you are used to.

Electricity and Plug Standards
The electricity supply in Tanzania is 220/240 volts at 50Hz. Plugs are 3 point square (UK Type). Adapters are available at major airports.

Day 5: Tanzania Bush Camps Central Serengeti, Serengeti National Park (Thu, 7 December)

After breakfast you will start descending into the plains. Today is one big game drive, wherever you drive, you can encounter animals. And in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area you get a fantastic chance to have a look at how the Maasai live, when passing their “boma’s” (villages) or when watching them herd their cattle in the vast Ngorongoro Conservation Area.

During the Great Migration these planes are literally covered in animals, wildebeests and zebras, in search of grazing and water and participating in one of the largest annual movements of mammals on earth.

However, Serengeti National Park has more to offer than the Great Migration, large herds of buffels, numerous different kinds of antelopes like the topi, hartebeest, dikdik, thomson and grant gazelles and it is the best chance of spotting a lion, or more accurately: lions. The open plains form an ideal hunting ground for the fastest mammal on earth: the cheetah.

At the end of the afternoon you will arrive the central part of the Serengeti called Seronera. Your next overnight accommodation is Tanzania Bush Camp. Here you will stay for 4 nights.

Overnight: Tanzania Bush Camps Central Serengeti

Giraffes that elegantly move over the planes, high above everything and everyone, eating the leaves from the acacia trees without even bothering about the thorns, the gracious flights of the (not so gracious) vultures, hyenas trying to defend their prey from the lions. All in all a day full of unforgettable impressions!

In the Lerai Forest elephant with giant tusks pull leaves and branches from the trees while on the plains wildebeests, zebras and antelopes are grazing. Lions often look for the shade, sometimes even the shade of a car. The high numbers of animals and the imposing landscape with the crater walls make a day in the crater and overwhelming experience!

Travel Information

The name Tanzania conjures up images of wildebeest stampeding across vast savannah, rain forests teeming with monkeys and birdlife, and great plains brimming with legions of game. All of these natural wonders and more are on offer in this exceptionally diverse African nation.

With all of this diversity on offer, the most difficult part of your Tanzanian holiday experience is likely to be deciding where to go!(Safari Northern Circuit)

Elsewhere in Tanzania, towns and cities are linked by a steady stream of buses and dala-dalas (minibuses), and in the cities, there is public transport in the way of buses, dala-dalas, taxis, and, in some places, bicycles or tuk-tuks.

Precision Air run regular services, mostly via Dar es Salaam, Kilimanjaro or Zanzibar, to all main towns and other destinations in East Africa and beyond. All national parks and some of the top-end luxury lodges have airstrips.(Safari Northern Circuit)

Most camps, lodges and hotels have bottled water readily available.(Safari Northern Circuit)

If it has rained during the short rains, then it normally dries up for a few months, January and February, which is Tanzania’s ‘short dry season’, before starting to rain again in earnest in March.(Safari Northern Circuit)

The sun may sometimes not feel hot, but it can still easily burn, especially if it is cloudy and overcast.(Safari Northern Circuit)
